The Weekly Newsletter of Cub Scout Pack 97

Book/Supply Collection

Thank you to those few boys who were able to attend the Sun Valley PTO Meeting to drop off the books.  I know the last minute meeting change made it difficult for parents to make it and that some did not notice the time change in the last newsletter.  We (and Sun Valley) appreciate all the wonderful books they were able to donate on behalf of the pack!

Camping/Boat Regatta

I would like to start out by congratulating again the winners of our Boat Regatta!

1st Place:           Alex Macari

2nd Place:          Zachary Renyhart

3rd Place:          John Nixon

Fan Favorite:     Gregory Mann

There were a lot of truly unique and great designs and we were all so proud of the boys and the wonderful sportsmanship exhibited by all!

For those of us on the planning side of it, we couldn’t have been happier with the weekend.  The weather was amazing, our parents and volunteers were awesome, the scouts and siblings all were great and we only had to use the one band-aid that I know of!

James words from the Scouts Own service Sunday morning truly were moving to me; especially after such a busy week leading up to the event and with helping attend to numerous detail throughout the weekend.  After breaking down the camp I took a few minutes to look out at the beautiful lake and the surroundings and just take time to reflect on the week and think what a wonderful gift this weekend was and how thankful I was.  Obviously, I’m thankful to all my fellow committee members and leaders who gave of their time to plan and execute all the behind the scenes stuff –and to all the wonderful volunteers who helped with everything from directing meal traffic lines and distributing food - to squirting hand sanitizer – but I’m also thankful to every parent who said yes to their son when they asked if they could join scouts this year and to every parent who is finding time in an already extremely hectic schedule to squeeze in weekly den meetings and scout activities nearly every weekend this month.  So, I would just like to extend a huge thank you to each and every one of you and let you know how much I’m looking forward to sharing more great experiences with you throughout the coming year.

Photos from this weekend have been posted to the photo gallery; if you have any additional ones you would like to add to the collection, please send them to amy@pack97scouts.com

Tuesday’s Meeting

We are back to den meetings this week.  Please be sure all boys are in uniform from now on (you never know when there might be a surprise inspection) and that they bring their books each week.  Some weeks they will be working on requirements from the books and it is easier to keep track of those they’ve completed if you review with them on a weekly basis what they accomplished that meeting.

Also, I will not be available to receive payments until the later part of the meeting this Tuesday.  I plan to spend the first part of the evening going den to den to award several beads that have been earned in just one short week!  Please make sure the boys have their award fobs with them!  If your scout was not at the pack meeting – I will also have his award fob to hand out and any beads he’s already earned.  You can now find a listing of all the beads available and what each color represents on the main page of the website underneath the calendar section.

Popcorn Sales Information

Have you sold any popcorn?  Please help support our pack and all the great activities we planned for the year by doing your part.  Sales go through November 10th.  Brannen passed out popcorn information packets on the 30th; please see him if you need a sales package.

Don’t forgot to sign up for one of the Pack Sales events.  On October 11-12th we will be selling popcorn in front of the Monroe Harris Teeter and October 18th-19th we will be selling in front of the Sun Valley Harris Teeter.  All scouts are expected to participate in at least one of the group sales events and need to sign up for a time slot.  If you cannot attend either weekend, please see Anthony Irwin or Brannen as soon as possible. If you have any popcorn questions, please send them to:  popcorn@pack97scouts.com

Gold Rush

Whether it’s your first or 4th trip to Gold Rush, the boys love this event!  They spend most of the day running back and forth looking for gold nuggets in the field to spend at any of about 60-100 game booths giving candy as prizes.  Oh, yeah – they also get a chance to earn belt loops for shooting BB-Guns and Arrows and they get a chance to take a canoe out on the lake.  As fun as the event itself is, however, there are a few things we the adults need to prepare for.  This event is open to EVERY Cub Scout in our District – which is several counties and typically thousands of people.  Therefore, it gets quite crowded and trying to find the group and get your gear to the campsite is its own hurdle.  We never know where our actual site is until the first member of our party gets there.  We also have no control over which area they place us in and the last 2 times we were there it was the farthest site from everything.  They are very strict about vehicles going past a certain point and only until 7pm and most of us have had to hoof in all our gear on several trips back and forth about half a mile. So – be prepared that getting there and getting set up will likely not be fun.  Once you’re set up, though – it will be lots of fun J

As I mentioned, there are several game booths – guess where these come from?  Us!  We will have about 3-5 games which will need to be staffed throughout the day.  You will each need to sign up and/or work a shift throughout the day.  I also mentioned the rewards were candy – so guess what else we need you to bring… you guessed it!  Everyone needs to bring in a bag of candy to throw into the reward bucket; preferably candy that won’t melt while sitting in the sun all day.

If anyone would also like to volunteer to make gold – please let me know and I’ll fill you in on the tricks we’ve learned.  We need to have several buckets to contribute to the gold field.

For this event, there are both Council fees to attend and pack fees for meals:

Scouts:                            Fees are covered by the pack

Adults/Siblings Camping:  $2 each

Adults/Children over 5:     $10 for meals

Children 2-5:                     $5 for meals

Please Note: Even if you are only coming out for the day on Saturday, the meal fee will still apply.

We must pre-register as a Pack by the 17th, so you only have this week and next to sign up.

Let us know if you have any questions!
