The Weekly Newsletter of Cub Scout Pack 97

August 31, 2009

WELCOME TO THE NEW EDITION OF THE PACK 97 NEWSLETTER!

All email addresses were obtained from either new BSA Registration forms or carried over from last year’s edition.  We do not distribute or provide your email addresses to anyone outside of Pack 97 and solely use them for the distribution of Pack 97 related news and information.  If at any time you would like to be removed from the list; please reply to this email.  If you have additional addresses you would like to receive the email to; please forward them to me.

FIRST DEN MEETING THIS WEEK

Our first den meeting will be held this Tuesday at 7pm at Christ Community Church.  If you are unable to attend; please contact either Cubmaster Anthony Irwin (Cubmaster@pack97scouts.com), the leader for your son’s den or you can email in reply to this newsletter and I will pass it on.  It is extremely important (especially as we set up the new dens) to be sure all active scouts are accounted for and evenly assigned to dens.  We are still in need of Assistant Leaders for most dens and due to the size of some of our dens; may even need additional leaders.  Please let us know if you would be interested in serving in a leadership position.

HEALTH FORMS, BYLAW PAGES & CODE OF CONDUCT

These forms were included in the yellow folders handed out at the end of the Parent Orientation meeting last week.  Please be sure and have these completed and ready to turn in by the end of this Tuesday’s den meeting.  If you did not receive a yellow folder, we will have them available from the kitchen area.

REGISTRATION FORMS, FEES, BOOKS & BOATS

All new scouts and Leaders should have either already completed a BSA registration form either at the initial meeting at Shiloh or at the Parent Orientation meeting last week.  If you are new and have not yet completed or returned this form; please see Amy in the kitchen area for a form.  BSA Registration is $21 for new scouts and Leaders.  Returning scouts and Leaders do not need to complete a new BSA registration form; yet will need to submit the BSA fee of $16.  All den books and Regatta Boats will be distributed as we receive your 1st Pack Fee installment of $70 which is due by September 8th.  Though combining this fee is easier for the Pack in terms of collection; if you need to spread this fee out; please see Amy.  We know that several of our scout families have been hit by the economic downturn and we don’t want any scouts to be excluded or withdraw based on the new fee structure.

Because the lines can get quite long during the first few weeks; I plan to arrive by 6:30pm if anyone would like to arrive early to beat the lines and will also stay as late as anyone needs me to!

CAMPING COMMITTEE MEETING

Wednesday, September 2nd at 7pm – Christ Community Church

Only a few weeks to our first campout and time for our first Camping Committee Meeting. We will be discussing the particular needs of the upcoming Camping & Rain Gutter Regatta @ The Optimist Club in Monroe, September 18th – 20th.

A few of the topics we will discuss are positions needed to fill the camping committee, camping events, timeline and menus. The meeting should last approximately one hour. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact either our Committee Chair Karen French (karen@pack97scouts.com)  or our Camping Committee Chair, Ron Bain (ron@pack97scouts.com)

LEADERS MEETING

Monday, September 7th at 7pm – Anthony Irwin’s House

All new and returning leaders should plan to attend this meeting. You will be reviewing den setup, programs, getting to know the new leaders and planning the pack activity for the camping trip.  If you have any questions, or need directions – please email or see Anthony at this week’s meeting.

SLEEPING WITH THE COWS & BOAT REGATTA

Saturday, September 19th & Sunday, September 20th

For this first camping event, we are “officially planning” just an overnighter and keeping it close to home so we can help our new campers ease in!  Therefore, we will not be cooking dinner on Friday night or breakfast Saturday morning; so if you plan to camp Friday you are more than welcome to; though please plan for these meals on your own.

CAMPING INFO

The site details/directions are as follows:

The Optimist Club

1974 Skyway Dr

Monroe of the Shell Gas Station.

Essentially, it is at the intersection of 601 and 74.  Go one block to the shell station and turn onto the gravel farm road into the woods, literally right next door to the Shell Station.

There are bathrooms and running water, though not what we would consider “useable” showers – so plan on roughing it without the showers. J There is also a small lake/large pond available for fishing during the free time in the afternoon or on Sunday.

REGATTA INFO

Boats are being distributed as we receive your Pack Fee Installment.  Rules and regulations are available from here: Rules/Regulations sheet or will be available from the kitchen area at the den meeting.  Please keep in mind, even though this is a competitive event which will include the awarding of trophies; our scouts should always remember to simply “Do their Best”!  Enjoy crafting these boats together and make sure the emphasis is on having FUN!

Would you or a sibling like to also create a boat for the “Non-Scout Race”?  We will have extra boats available for purchase in the kitchen area at a cost of $4 each.
